It is a beautiful thing, to fall in love. Most of the time there are no fireworks or bolts of lightening. There are often no neon signs that point to a couple and scream that they belong together.
But there are signs. Small little shifts in the universe that knocks two people into another orbit by themselves.
It very often does not start with a look. It is a rare thing to fall in love at first sight and more often than not the first impression is the wrong one. There are sloppy holes in his jeans and her eyes aren't quite blue enough. He rudely shoved passed her on the subway and she snapped her gum while he was trying to nap in his seat.
But those moments are the sparks that will fan a flame that will consume them and create something entirely new like a phoenix out of dust and ashes.
You'll fall in love on a Tuesday in March. There are no holidays or birthdays or anything out of the ordinary and you are simply sitting on your couch together in the evening. One is watching the news and the other is scrolling through instagram. And then you will look over and see that their eyes are just the right shade of gray in the tv light and you can imagine those eyes on your children and suddenly you're in love. Or you'll be picking at the frayed edges of their old jeans as you lean against them and you can feel their arms tighten around you in support and warmth and suddenly you're in love.
There will be quiet moments together in the kitchen where you are swapping jokes over soapy dishes and bubbles in the sink. There will be moments walking to the subway station together and your steps fall in sync and your hands are warm in each other's grasp and you are irrevocably and unconditionally and unquestionably in love.
It is a beautiful thing, to fall in love. There is no thunder strike from the gods above to signal that this is the one person you will spend the rest of your life with. There are no signs or signals or codes to let you know that this is your soulmate and your best friend and your lover and everything that you will ever need them to be.
It is in the simple and humble things of every day life. You will go to sleep one day and wake up knowing in your heart and your soul that this is the one for you. It will resonate within your very bones and rise from your toes to the tips of your fingers that this is the one you love. And you cannot imagine that there will ever be another human being who can make you as happy and as safe as this one makes you feel.
And when you do find this someone, this impossible and enduring love, you'll want to hold onto them forever just so you can love them for every moment of your life and show them that this is well and truly love.
Happy Valentine's Day
:) Kathryn
